Father's Day

Thursday 03 Sep 2020

This year the Father's Day tradition of honouring fathers is 110 years old, from conception.  So, when did this modern day tradition start and why?

In 1910, Sonora Smart Dodd, one of six children raised single-handed by their father, a Civil War veteran, decided there needed to be a day like Mother's Day for fathers.  Sonora campaigned for 62 years to establish the day as a federal holiday. Congress passed a resolution which called on citizens to “offer public and private expressions of such day to the abiding love and gratitude which they bear for their fathers.”  Father's Day in the US became official in 1972.

Australia celebrates Father's Day on the first Sunday in September. Being the start of Spring, it’s the perfect time to gather with family and friends to honour the role of fathers in our families and communities.

Enjoy your Father's Day!
